PETALING JAYA: Police are looking for a Syrian man after hotel staff found a bomb-like object in his hotel room at Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.

The object that apparently looked like a hand grenade has sparked fears that the man may be a member of the Islamic State (IS) terror group and may be looking to carry out an attack in Malaysia.

Port Dickson OCPD Supt Adzil Abu Shah said hotel staff were cleaning the man's room when they found the object under the mattress.

"The man was in the process of checking out when they found it. But before they could stop him, he entered the room, took the object and left in a hurry," he said when contacted on Wednesday.

Supt Adzil said police are in the process of tracing the man based on CCTV footage of him and his black Proton Saga.

"The man was staying with seven other people who are believed to be his family members. They stayed in two rooms for one night," he said.

He said quick action is necessary as there is a worry that the man could be looking to carry out an attack in the district.
