PUTRAJAYA, Sept 8 ― The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has approved Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s application in principle pending clarifications from the party's leadership, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today.

The deputy prime minister, who is also home minister, said the party will not be permitted, however, to use “Bersatu” as its acronym as this was not contained in the application.

“Pursuant to my announcement, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has been approved today with no amendments and they have registered the acronym as PPBM.

“That's their application and that's what was approved by RoS. Not Parti Bersatu, but PPBM. That was their application and they can't use any other name because that was their own submission. It wasn't an RoS order, but that's what they applied (for),” Ahmad Zahid said in a press conference here.

RoS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah, who was also present at the press conference, explained that PPBM had initially requested for “Bersatu” as the party's acronym, but agreed to the change after negotiation with the agency.

“When we studied their application, we found that there were other parties already using that name, so we didn't allow,” he added, after which Ahmad Zahid interjected to say that there are already six parties and organisations with names containing “Bersatu”.

Razin also warned that PPBM may be deregistered if it continues to refer to itself as “Bersatu”, saying this would contravene the party's constitution and was actionable under the Societies Act 1966.

On the explanations sought from PPBM's leaders, Ahmad Zahid said the RoS needed to know the precise functions of the chairman and president.

PPBM’s chairman is former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad while its president is Ahmad Zahid's predecessor, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Ahmad Zahid said that full approval will be given after PPBM's leaders clarify this with the RoS.

Muhyiddin applied to registered PPBM with the RoS last month. The party consists largely of former Umno members, including some who were sacked by the Malay nationalist party.
