KANGAR: Police have detained four students who were caught red-handed throwing stones at vehicles travelling on the Changlun-Kuala Perlis expressway near here.
"These youths have been throwing stones at vehicles since five months ago," said Perlis police chief SAC Shafei Ismail, adding that they had caused thousands of ringgit in damage to vehicle owners.
"Six reports have been lodged since November and the latest police report was on Dec 1," he said.
He said police began observing the stretch two weeks ago.
"They were arrested when one of them threw stones at policemen in disguise," he said.
He said the four, aged between 15 and 17, were arrested on Thursday afternoon and two of them tested positive for syabu.
"The two youths who tested positive of syabu admitted to throwing stones at vehicles at Km13.3 and Km16 of the Changlun-Kuala Perlis expressway," he said.
"They would hide on overhead bridges and throw stones at vehicles below.
"After hitting a car, they would flee the scene in motorcycles," he said, adding that they turned the illegal act into a competition of sorts.
He said they were looking for two to three more suspects involved in the case.
The youths have been remanded for four days until Dec 14 to facilitate investigations of the case under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief.
