Mother of deceased boy in abuse case denied bail

KUALA LUMPUR: A mother charged with abusing and causing injuries that caused the death of her six-year-old son, Muhammad Akhil Mustaqim Rasidy, will remain in jail after being denied bail by the Magistrate's court in Ampang on Monday.

Nor Zuliana Tahir, 32, and her husband, Zuhairy Kasim, 38, claimed trial to the charges.
They were accused of committing the offences at their home at the Permai Ria apartments, in Tasik Permai, Ampang between May 23 and 26.
The couple have two kids from the marriage, while Nor Zuliana has four kids from her previous marriage, including Muhammad Akhil.
Magistrate Ayuni Izzati denied bail for the mother and fixed July 18 for mention.
Later, Nor Zuliana claimed trial in the Ampang Sessions Court to causing the death of Muhammad Akhil.
Sessions judge Unaizah Mohd ordered counsel to further submit on mitigation for bail and postponed the case to Tuesday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Goh Ai Rene had urged both courts to deny bail to the accused as the child had died and that the alleged crimes were non-bailable.
Nor Zuliana’s counsel, Donny Abdullah, pleaded for bail for Nor Zuliana as she was five months pregnant and had been in detention since she was arrested on May 26.
Zuhairy’s lawyer also asked for leniency, saying his client was the family’s breadwinner and made barely enough as a taxi driver.
According to the charge sheet, Zuhairy was the one who filed the initial complaint against the child being abused.
