KUALA LUMPUR: Google unveiled two major strategic initiatives at the launch of Malaysia’s National AI Office (NAIO) yesterday, underscoring its commitment to advancing AI-driven public service transformation.
The initiatives, which build on Google’s recent US$2 billion investment in a new data center and Google Cloud region in Selangor, aim to enhance productivity and policy-making through generative AI, said the tech giant in a press release today.
The first initiative, AI at Work, is a collaboration between Google Cloud and the Ministry of Digital to integrate Google’s Gemini AI into public sector workflows.
“A pilot program will see public officers using AI tools for tasks like report writing, meeting summaries, and data visualisation. This effort is designed to streamline administrative processes, allowing officers to focus on strategic priorities,” said the statement.
“Gemini for Google Workspace provides secure, enterprise-grade AI tools to empower public officers, fostering efficiency, innovation, and citizen-centric service delivery,” said Serene Sia, Country Director for Malaysia and Singapore at Google Cloud.
Gemini integrates with Google Workspace apps such as Gmail, Drive, and Docs, providing AI-powered assistance for content creation, collaboration, and decision-making.
It added that, a key component of this initiative is NotebookLM, a personalised AI research assistant that allows users to extract insights and generate summaries from trusted content sources.
Meanwhile, the second initiative involves the establishment of an 'AI Policy and Skilling Lab' in Malaysia, whereby this lab aims to provide Malaysian policymakers with the frameworks and best practices necessary to harness AI responsibly and effectively.
Google said that the lab will convene industry experts, government officials, and stakeholders to address emerging challenges and promote secure AI adoption.
“The AI Policy and Skilling Lab aligns with Malaysia’s vision of operationalising safe and responsible AI,” said Su Ann Lim, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Southeast Asia at Google Cloud.
“This initiative will bolster Malaysia’s standing as a regional AI leader, attracting investments and creating economic opportunities ahead of its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025,” she added.
