KUALA LUMPUR: Cameron Highlands Member of Parliament, Ramli Mohd Noor described the opportunity given to him to chair the Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday evening as a recognition to the Orang Asli community in the country.
He said he would try his best to handle the task if given the trust to chair the Dewan Rakyat sitting again after this.
“On the instructions of the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat to carry out his duties as Deputy Speaker yesterday, it was a recognition to the Orang Asli community.
Parliament is a space where all the people's problems can be discussed by their elected representatives," he said in a statement.
Yesterday, he chaired the afternoon session of the Dewan Rakyat session after receiving instructions from the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun.
Barisan Nasional (BN) had previously nominated Ramli to fill the vacant post of Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat after the previous incumbent, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said resigned on August 23 last year.
Yesterday, the motion to fill another post of Deputy Speaker which was supposed to take place yesterday, that is after the oral question and answer session was again postponed.
Commenting further, Ramli also thanked BN for believing in nominating his name before.
"I promise to carry out this responsibility with full integrity and fairness based on the principles of freedom of speech and the need for prudence when discussing any motion in the interest of the people," he said.
