ALOR SETAR, Aug 2 – Kedah reported 18 COVID-19 cases of people brought in dead (BID) to hospital from July 25 - 31.

State Local Government and Health Committee chairman, Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman, said they make up 58 per cent of the 31 deaths from the virus during the same period.

He said that perhaps there was delayed medical care or they did not have symptoms, which is a very worrying situation.

“The situation is further complicated by the new variants, like Beta and Delta, which are highly contagious and more severe.

“The virus isn’t just dangerous to the elderly and high-risk groups, but the under-40s too,” said Dr Mohd Hayati in a statement today.

He added that COVID-19 cases in Kedah have been growing for several weeks now and are expected to rise this week as well.

As at July 31, Kedah has administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to 577,148 people (37.5 per cent) out of the 1,540,600 adults (18 years and over) in the state, while 298,611 people (19.4 per cent) have received their second dose.

“We expect about 40 per cent of Kedah residents eligible for the vaccine to be fully inoculated by the end of August,” said Dr Mohd Hayati.
