KUALA LUMPUR: The Greater Klang Valley Special Task Force (GKV STF) will introduce a 'geofencing' application tomorrow to monitor the movements of COVID-19 category 1 and 2 patients who have been instructed to undergo quarantine at home.
Those who test positive for COVID-19 and undergo quarantine at home will be required to upload the application on their mobile phones and their whereabouts during that period will be monitored by the authorities.
Authorities will take immediate action including legal action if a patient is found to be out of the home or in excess of a pre-determined radius.
GKV STF Joint Commander, Brigadier General Dr Mohd Arshil Moideen, said the main purpose of the application developed was to reduce the contagion in the community which usually occurs due to the irresponsible attitude of COVID-19 patients.
“The pilot project (pilot) of this application will start this Sunday (tomorrow) and within 11 days it will be fully functional complete with notification and‘ tracking ’of patients.
"It will be a mandatory application for those in categories 1 and 2 who are quarantined at home," he said when briefing the COVID-19 (PKRC) Integrated Quarantine and Treatment Center (PKRC) 2.0 at the Malaysia Agriculture Expo Park (MAEPS) Serdang, yesterday. .
Also present was the Joint Task Force Commander, Datuk Dr Mohamed Alwi Abdul Rahman, who is also the Head of the Selayang Hospital Emergency Department.
Dr Mohd Arshil explained that the 'geofencing' application which does not yet have this name is different from the MySejahtera application because it has different functions and purposes.
"Of course we are expecting negative feedback such as why we want applications other than MySejahtera. We do not want to disturb MySejahtera because the address on MySejahtera is sometimes not at your location to quarantine.
“You may put your parents’ home address on MySejahtera but when infected with COVID-19, you are quarantined at another location, ”he said.
GKV STF decided to use this application also to facilitate the monitoring and action of the authorities if any party leaves the quarantine area.
"During the Movement Control Order 1.0, we had the police who would check every patient who was quarantined at home but during the period the infection increased to 7,000, 8,000 and even 10,000 in the Klang Valley alone, it was difficult to do so and this application fills the gap, "he said.
Dr Mohd Arshil said, his party is still studying the extent of the patients who are quarantined to leave the house.
“Patients don’t have to worry about not leaving the house at all, just to dispose of rubbish, the authorities will not come to your house to take action,” he said.
He also warned that no COVID-19 patient should accidentally throw the application in the phone or turn off the GPS GPS (global positioning system).
"We will be able to trace those who do so and the authorities will come soon to track you down. Yes, legal action will be taken but I prefer a 'soft approach' to be implemented so that all parties comply with the set instructions," he said.
