SHAH ALAM, April 4 -- A councillor of the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) and three of his friends were arrested by police for violating the Movement Control Order (MCO) by playing badminton in a public hall in Section 25 here earlier yesterday morning.

A Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters spokesman ACP Ismail Muslim said the four individuals were arrested this morning and would be investigated under Regulation 3 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.

"The four were arrested this morning for violating the MCO directive, the police will ask them to be remanded in court as soon as possible and I also want to inform that for the duration of the MCO any sporting activity in public areas is prohibited.

"I understand that the MBSA has also conducted its own internal investigation and will take action," he told a press conference here today.

Earlier, several pictures viraled on social media claiming that a MBSA councillor along with three of his friends had allegedly only been warned for violating the directive of the MCO by playing badminton in the hall and it had angered the public.

Meanwhile, the MBSA said, in a statement, that it had left the case fully to the police for action.

Its head of corporate and public relations division, Shahrin Ahmad, said MBSA had also sent a show cause letter to the councillor in question and a report would be submitted to the state government for further action.

"During the MCO period, the halls are closed and any sport and recreational activities are not allowed, so MBSA will not compromise over any intrusion by any individual, organisation, group or civil servant," he said.
