PETALING JAYA: The Tanjung Piai by-election defeat is a resounding wake-up call from voters, says PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (pic).

The Economic Affairs Minister added that lessons in defeat are more enduring than in victory.

Addressing the many attacks on the leadership of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the worst defeat in a by-election for Pakatan Harapan since winning the Federal Government last year, Azmin said that Pakatan should be more committed to fulfilling its promises to the rakyat now.

"This is not the time for Pakatan members and leaders to take pot-shots at each other or take advantage of the situation to challenge the coalition’s leadership. "Any attacks on the leadership will only continue to weaken Pakatan and its effectiveness in governing the country," said Azmin said in a statement on Monday (Nov 18).

He added that this is the time to unite and face a new reality, saying that the defeat is a challenge to each and every member and leader of Pakatan to prove that they can continue to work together as a team.

"We need to show to the people that the government remains committed to the mandate given by the people," said Azmin.

He said that not everything Pakatan thinks is best for the people is right.

"We need to recognise that what we think is best for the rakyat may sometimes not be necessarily so. We must therefore put our finger to the pulse of the rakyat to listen carefully and earnestly to their concerns and grouses," said Azmin.

He added that the Pakatan government will redouble its commitment and efforts to win the trust of the rakyat.

The Tanjung Piai by-election saw MCA's Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng win with an overwhelming 15,086-vote majority.

Wee, a former two-term Tanjung Piai MP, garnered a total of 25,466 votes against Pakatan candidate Karmaine Sardini who obtained 10,380 votes; Gerakan's Wendy Subramaniam (1,707), followed by Datuk Dr Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz of Berjasa (850) and two independents, Dr Ang Chuan Lock (380) and Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar (32).
