PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has seized 16 items and interrogated three individuals for allegedly sending offensive and pornographic materials via social media.

The MCMC, with the cooperation of the police, carried out raids in four locations - Bangi, Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur and Cameron Highlands - earlier this week based on public complaints.

The authorities seized 16 items, which include SIM cards, memory cards, mobile phones, external hard disks, and laptops.

MCMC Enforcement and Investigation Department head Datuk Mohd Shafie Harun said that the team also found pornographic videos and pictures.

Mohd Shafie added that the suspects were allegedly involved in sending offensive content and pornographic videos via WhatsApp and text messages.

The cases are being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

If convicted, one can be fined not more than RM50,000, imprisoned for a year or both," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 31).

He also said that the mobile phones and SIM cards from the complainants were send to the MCMC's digital forensic lab for analysis.

He said that since 2018 until March 30 this year, 710 items were confiscated by the commission.

"The commission also received 237 cases in 2018, and this year, until March 30, there were 110 cases," he added.

Mohd Shafie added that high-profile cases, including those insulting Prophet Muhammad or the royal institution, are given Priority 1.

They are investigated between two and four weeks, while Priority 2 and Priority 3 cases are solved within 12 and 24 weeks respectively.
