PUTRAJAYA: The MACC have arrested a further 22 enforcement officers from the Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ), believed to be involved in "protecting" lorry drivers.

The men, age between 32 and 55, were arrested at the Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Penang between 11am and 4.15pm Saturday (April 20).

Sources said that all of them were believed to have received a "monthly payment" of RM10,000 in total.

"We suspect that the accumulated amount received by this group has reached RM140,000 to date," said the source.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Azam Baki confirmed the arrest.

On April 16, the MACC had arrested 31 people, believed to have committed the same offence. Those arrested include 23 enforcement officers from the Penang JPJ.

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will not defend any corrupt acts committed by its officers, says JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid.

He said the department would not compromise on issues related to integrity and corruption, following a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into a protection racket of lorry drivers involving JPJ officers in Penang.

“We will give full cooperation to the authorities, because this is a very serious matter.

“I would like to warn our officers. In JPJ, there is no compromise when it comes to the issue of integrity and corruption.

On Wednesday, 30 individuals, including 24 Penang JPJ officers, were remanded for seven days to assist with MACC investigations into the racket.

The suspects allegedly turned a blind eye on lorry drivers who committed road offences in Penang.

Sources said as inducement, the officers received payment of between RM10,000 and RM32,000.

Shaharuddin said the suspects, upon their release from remand, would be suspended from their duties for up to two months.

In the meantime, he said some officers from the northern states will be seconded to Penang to ensure its enforcement operations were not affected.

“Our enforcement efforts are not crippled by this. It will continue and, in fact, at this moment, it is going on as usual,” he said.
