Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz aims to recruit more youth to join MRCS

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed Malaysian Red Crescent Society chairman Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Sultan Abdul Halim aims to recruit more youth volunteers to the society. “Since the society was established seven decades ago, we now have 300,000 members of whom two-thirds are youth. We aim to have more participation from the youth,” she said. Speaking to reporters after a short ceremony marking her appointment, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said she was proud to have been appointed the society’s first female chairman. She replaces Tunku Tan Sri Shahriman Tunku Sulaiman, who had served MRCS for the past 16 years and has now been appointed its adviser. Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said MRCS had adopted nine villages in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang to prepare them for disaster relief and recovery programmes. The Tengku Termenggong Kedah said a total of 3,335 people have benefited from the programme.

“They were exposed to the ‘Disaster Risk Management’ approach which means they have to gone through training under our cleanliness and health modules, and also training on management and supply of clean water, especially during disasters.”

Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said she was planning to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad soon. “I am also looking forward to having a meeting with ministries such as the Health Ministry, Women, Family and Community Development Ministry and Youth Ministry, to engage with them on our programmes in the future. © New Straits Times Press
