SEA Games gold medalists to get payout of RM3 million

Under the National Sports Incentive Scheme, athletes will be rewarded RM20,000 for their first gold, followed by RM10,000 for subsequent gold medals.
PETALING JAYA: A bumper payout amounting to RM3 million will go to gold medallists of the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017).Under the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam), athletes will be rewarded RM20,000 for their first gold at the Games followed by RM10,000 for subsequent gold medals, reported the New Straits Times.
According to the National Sports Council (NSC) website, those in team sports with less than five players will also receive RM20,000 for gold, while those with more than five will receive RM5,000 per person.
However, silver and bronze medal winners will not receive any rewards.
National athletes who broke SEA Games records will receive RM1,000. Malaysian athletes broke a total of 18 records at the Games this year.
The website said coaches and sports associations responsible for the athletes would be rewarded through the Coaching Incentive Scheme (SGAR) and the Sports Management Excellence Scheme (SIKAP).
In the just concluded Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, Malaysian athletes won 145 gold, emerging as overall champions of the Games.
Meanwhile Bernama reported that the Melaka state government has allocated RM140,000 as an incentive to athletes of the state who delivered medals at the SEA Games.
Melaka Chief Minister Idris Haron said athletes who obtained gold would receive an incentive of RM8,000 with RM5,000 for silver and RM3,000 for bronze.
“The reward is an appreciation of those who represented the nation apart from encouraging athletes to raise their performance levels.
“So far, a total of 30 Melaka athletes were recorded to have won medals at the biennial meet,” he told a press conference after chairing a state executive council meeting in Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh here today.
