A street brawl between two groups of teenagers on Thursday at Taman Wangsa Melawati was not due to gang rivalry

KUALA LUMPUR: A street brawl between two groups of teenagers on Thursday at Taman Wangsa Melawati was not due to gang rivalry, said police.
Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif (pic) said what started as a scuffle between two friends had escalated into a group fight.
"I want to assure everyone that the two groups are not rival gangs but actually fighting among friends that got out of hand," he said during a press conference at Wangsa Maju police headquarters Saturday.
He explained that the two friends had got into a fight on Wednesday before calling on their friends for back up.
"The next day, the two groups, on motorcycles, confronted one another. One side charged forward while the other side fled except two who fell off their motorcycles and were beaten up.
"Members of the public who witnessed the incident apprehended 12 of the teenagers and with the help of the police, rushed two of the victims to Ampang Hospital," he said, adding that a metal rod was also seized.
Police also arrested six more teenagers involved in the brawl on Friday.
He added that the teenagers, aged 14 to 18, were mostly from nearby schools and all knew each other.
The two injured students, both 16, received stitches on their heads and are reported to be in stable condition.
