KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman thought he had pulled off the perfect crime when he staged his own kidnapping but was foiled while waiting in line at the bank.
The man, 26, was patiently queuing at the bank counter to collect his own ransom money of RM25,000 when the police, who had been tracking the cash showed up.
Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif (pic) said the man staged his own kidnapping by calling his 33-year-old cousin, a manager, around 2.30pm on Thursday.
"He pretended to be one of four kidnappers and demanded RM60,000 for his own release.
"The cousin contacted the police while negotiating the ransom down to RM25,000," he said during a press conference at Wangsa Maju police headquarters Saturday.
The ransom money was supposed to be deposited into the so-called victim's bank account.
However, police tracked the man to a bank in Kajang and arrested him as he was waiting to withdraw the ransom.
"He was still holding on to his queue number," said Supt Mohamad Roy.
He said that the man confessed to faking his own kidnapping as he was having financial problems with his restaurant business.
