Ringgit weakens to 4.1 to USD as KLCI falls below crucial 1,600

KUALA LUMPUR: Heavy foreign selling sent the FBM KLCI below the psychologically important 1,600 level in late Friday morning trade as the ringgit fell to a fresh 1998 low of 4.1000 to the US dollar.
At 11.24am, the KLCI was down 24.19 points or 1.49% to 1,597.43. Turnover was 908.88 million shares valued at RM627.54mil. Losers hammered gainers 671 to 121.
Heavyweights Maybank and Tenaga were among the top losers.
Maybank lost 23 sen to RM8.37 and Tenaga was down 22 sen to RM10.64.
Petronas Gas lost 38 sen to RM21.04 and UMW was down 25 sen to RM9.28.
BAT fell 78 sen to RM61.42, while among the plantations skidded, KL Kepong was down 46 sen to RM20.56 and PPB Group 38 sen to RM14.74.
