Selling items on FB or Instagram illegal if seller not registered with CCM, says deputy minister

The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism ministry has declared that any one selling items online directly via Facebook or Instagram must register themselves with the Companies Commission of Malaysia, else such sale is deemed illegal.
Responding to a question in the Dewan Negara today, its deputy minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said such online traders must register themselves so as to protect consumers from being cheated or exploited by the traders, Bernama reported today.
"Under the new Consumer Protection Regulations (Online Commerce Transactions) 2012, online traders must display the name of their business, business/company registration number, email address and telephone number on their Facebook or Instagram," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Ahmad was speaking during the winding-up debate on Control of Supplies (Amendment) Bill 2014) at the Dewan Negara.
The matter was raised by Senator Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff who had enquired as to the steps taken by the ministry to protect consumers of online trading of goods and services. – December 17, 2014.
