KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time in the party's history, MIC is forced to hold re-elections for the three vice-president and 23 central working committee posts.
Deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the Registrar of Societies, in a letter on Friday, found irregularities in the party elections held in Malacca in November and recommended that the posts be re-elected.
“With a heavy heart, I have to announce that the ROS received various complaints from contestants and others who contested in the branch, division and national elections.
“This is a sad and black day for the members because the party has been brought to this level, Such a situation has never occurred since the party’s formation in 1946,” he told a packed press conference at the party headquarters.
Dr Subramaniam, also Health Minister, said secretary-general A. Prakash Rao received the letter from the ROS on Friday evening.
“Since the president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel is overseas attending a conference, the contents of the letter were conveyed to him by Prakash.
"The president has advised the secretary-general to implement the requirements of the ROS letter,” he said.
Dr Subramaniam said following investigations, the ROS confirmed that there were weaknesses and irregularities in conforming with the party’s constitution and Socities Act.
Present were MIC vice-presidents Datuk S. Sothinathan, Datuk M. Saravanan, Prakash, treasurer general Datuk S. Murugessan, Wanita MIC chief Mohana Muniandy, Youth chief C. Sivarraajh, Putera chief Ravin Kumar and veteran MIC member Tan Sri K. S. Nijhar.
