KUALA LUMPUR: Police stopped four attempts to smuggle in and distribute almost 130kg of syabu and ganja worth RM1.5mil in the past three days alone.
Newly-minted Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said the seizures, carried out between Dec 4 and Sunday, also resulted in the arrests of nine people, aged between 19 and 58.
The busts, led by the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting) and Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), took place in Selangor and Penang.
Noor Rashid said the team had detained three Nigerian men in Taman Sri Mentari, Petaling Jaya, and found RM100,000 worth of syabu in their possession at about 3.15pm on Dec 4.
“We then stumbled across 1.02kg of syabu stashed in AC adapter boxes and a money counting machine flown in from Yuexiu, China, via a courier service,” he said.
Acting on a tip-off, NCID officers from the KL International Airport police headquarters discovered RM350,000 worth of syabu stashed inside a modified suitcase at around 1.35pm on Dec 5.
Police, said Noor Rashid, later found 3.4kg more of syabu in the suitcase placed inside the airport’s unclaimed baggage centre.
“The drugs were brought in from Doha,” he said.
A day later, two Iranian drug mules — a man and a woman — were arrested after they were spotted behaving suspiciously at the KLIA baggage claim area; 6.16kg of syabu worth RM620,000 was found in their luggage.
In the final and biggest drug haul of the week, a drug syndicate in Penang was crippled with the seizure of 119.4kg of ganja and the arrest of four people.
The nine-hour special operation, said Noor Rashid, was carried out from 10.20pm on Saturday, during which 119 blocks of ganja worth RM400,000 were seized.
“Other items confiscated were two cars, two Ducati and Aprilia superbikes, RM7,000 cash and 420 Thai baht (RM44),” he said, adding that the drugs had been smuggled in on a boat from Satun, Thailand.
