Hannah ThomasKUALA LUMPUR: The daughter of former Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, Hannah Thomas, will contest against Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the Grayndler seat in the country's Federal Election scheduled for May 3.
Hannah, who is running on the Greens party ticket, is a lawyer, activist and writer.
Through an article on The Greens' official website, Hannah said her background in Malaysia has greatly shaped her outlook on life.
“I was fortunate to grow up in Malaysia in a family with a long history of championing progressive values, where political involvement and activism were always encouraged. So it was probably a given that I would eventually join The Greens after Australia became my home.
"The triggering event was during the (Tony) Abbott administration and saw Liberal-Labor collaboration in atrocities against refugees and asylum seekers. The Greens were the only party that opposed that atrocities and racism, and that situation continues to this day," he said.
Hannah said that one of the main reasons she challenged Albanese was the ongoing atrocities against Gaza.
Hannah added that she also better understands the issues facing the younger generation.
Commenting on her feelings about opposing the prime minister in Grayndler, Hannah admitted that it was an unexpected but exciting decision.
The Australian Federal Election on May 3 will see the election of 150 Members of Parliament and 40 of the 76 members of the Senate.
