Police search for Toyota Corolla driver fleeing after collision with Alza
GEORGE TOWN: Police are tracking a driver of a Toyota Corolla-type car believed to have fled after crashing into the back of a vehicle in Jambul Hill in an incident on Monday.
The incident is now viral after the video clip was uploaded by another driver on social media and received various reactions from netizens.
Northeast District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said the driver of the car was found to have fled after crashing into the back of a Perodua Alza-type vehicle and endangering other road users.
According to him, the results of the review found that the incident occurred at Persiaran Bukit Jambul 5, about 8.48 am involving two cars.
"Following the incident, a police report was lodged by the owner of Perodua Alza in the Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Division of the Northeast District Police Headquarters on Monday.
"The investigation found that there was a minor accident between a Toyota Corolla and a Perodua Alza type car.
"The accident occurred when the vehicle in front stopped at the junction to prepare for a turn, however the driver of the Toyota Corolla car did not follow the turn and cut to the right (double line and against the current)," he said in a media statement on Tuesday.
Soffian said the driver of the Toyota Corolla had also re-entered the original route (left) when another vehicle came from the opposite direction.
"As a result of the driver's actions, he hit the rear bumper section of the Perodua Alza driven by a local man.
"The driver of the Perodua Alza car had come down and tried to talk, but the driver of the Toyota Corolla not only refused to cooperate but continued to flee by speeding his vehicle," he said.
He said further checks found the Perodua Alza car sustained minor damage to the right rear bumper, while the driver did not sustain any injuries.
"To date, the driver or registered owner of the Toyota Corolla vehicle has not come forward with a police report.
"Efforts to trace the driver and owner of the vehicle are ongoing. Cases are investigated in accordance with the 1959 traffic rules," he said.
