GEORGE TOWN: The bodyguard who allegedly shot his employer is said to have been behaving oddly on the day of the incident and even drew out his gun unexpectedly at a cafe in Karpal Singh Drive.
Witness Lim Boon Leng, 35, who is slain businessman Datuk Ong Teik Kwong' business partner, said he was concerned about how the accused, Ja'afar Halid, was acting.
Lim said Ong did not appear overly concerned and told him to ask Ja'afar himself.
"He (Ja'afar) told me that the situation was a little bit dangerous. I didn't press further as to what he meant by that," he said when asked by counsel Y. Anbananthan at the High Court here on Wednesday (Feb 27).
When asked about Ong's response, Lim said the businessman did not react to it.
Prior to the incident, Lim said the three of them were in Pulau Tikus but Ong and the accused went to a hotel while he went to a nearby restaurant.
When they met again three to four hours later, Lim said he was not told what they did.
The three of them then drove to Karpal Singh Drive and met up with Ong's friend, known only as Mr Ng, before they drove towards the Penang Bridge.
DPP Nurul Fatin Hussin asked Lim about the traffic on the Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway and what took place in the car before the shooting occurred there.
"I heard the accused chanting for a few seconds before the gun shots. I looked at Datuk Ong and saw him unconscious on the steering wheel before I was hit several times by a hard object," he said.
When asked by counsel Anbananthan to clarify whether Ong's body or head was on the steering wheel, Lim expressed uncertainty.
Lim said he managed to get out of the car and ran across the expressway before getting into a car.
He was then given a lift to a nearby petrol station before being picked up by a friend and taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Judicial Commissioner Abdul Wahab Mohamed fixed March 26 to continue the hearing.
The shooting incident took place at 7.15pm on Dec 1, 2016.
