This is where it happened: Lim re-enacting the incident to our reporter at the exact spot where his gold chain was snatched at a stall at Taman Asean in Malim
MELAKA: A lorry driver put up a big fight when a snatch thief grabbed his gold chain, so much so that for one brief moment, he hanged on perilously at the side of the thief’s kapcai.
But Lim Ek Chien’s efforts were in vain as the snatch thief, who came with three accomplices on three motorcycles, fled with the RM11,000 chain with gemstone pendants.
“I tried very hard to get it back as it is priceless to me,” said Lim, 49, adding that the gold chain had been “blessed” by a spiritual guru to help him recuperate from ailments.
In an interview yesterday, the father of five said he was having a coconut drink at a roadside stall in Taman Asean with his 11-year-old child at about 3.30pm on Feb 2.
But the culprit managed to ward off the kicks from Lim and made a quick escape.
Lim said that the three accomplices even splashed petrol on him.
“My T-shirt was drenched with petrol. I was afraid that one of them might just torch me alive. That’s when I decided togive in,” he said.
Lim said the criminals were armed with machetes and sharp objects.
“I consider myself lucky for suffering only minor injuries,” he said, adding that he had lodged a police report on the same day.
Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Afzanizar Ahmad had earlier confirmed Lim’s report.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
