SHAH ALAM: A 41-year-old man surrendered to police after burying his wife who succumbed to injuries sustained when she caught fire.
The 44-year-old woman died on Saturday after being hospitalised for 10 days.
Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Baharudin Mat Taib said the couple of 19 years had a fight on Feb 7 that led to the man threatening to burn down their house in Bukit Naga.
“It was around 9pm. The suspect, a lorry driver, set alight a wooden pallet and the wife, who was a clerk, managed to put it out.
“But she grabbed the fuel container from the man and poured the petrol on herself, daring him to burn her together with the house.
“The man, who was angry at her, ignited a lighter to scare her.
“The flames got to the wife’s tudung and the fire spread to her body,” said ACP Baharudin yesterday.
The wife ended up with 48% burns on her body while her husband suffered minor burns to his hands and feet.
ACP Baharudin said the suspect had tried to put out the fire.
“He called for help. The wife’s family rushed over. They then sent her to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang. She was transferred to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment,” he said.
ACP Baharudin said the man has been remanded until Feb 21.
It is learned that the couple have five children between five and 18.
The case has been classified under Section 304 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
