Ex-MIC VP pleads not guilty to money laundering charges

JOHOR BARU: Former MIC vice-president Tan Sri S. Balakrishnan claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to two counts of money laundering amounting to RM6.01mil.

S. Balakrishnan was accused of laundering the sum obtained through illegal activities from his personal as well as company accounts of Sinnayah & Sons Sdn Bhd.


He allegedly committed both offences at the Jalan Kebun Teh Johor Baru branch of Affin Bank Bhd, between June 12, 2012 and Sept 5, 2013.

The charges against him were filed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, Anti-Terrorism Financing Act and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (Amla) 2001.



Sessions Court Judge Jailani Rahman allowed an application by the prosecutor to transfer the Amla cases to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court and fixed Sept 3 for mention.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Deputy Public Prosecutor Khazrin Hafiz Khalil is prosecuting the case.

Balakrishnan is represented by lawyers Datuk V. Manukaran and N. Yuhendra.

The 64-year-old was arrested when he came to the state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Johor Baru around 2.15pm Monday (Aug 27).Last year, the man and his son were charged with submitting false claims of nearly RM13mil to the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) for river restoration works in Melaka five years ago.
