Kapar MP resigns as PKR secretary whip over bloc vote error

PETALING JAYA: Kapar MP G. Manivannan has resigned as the PKR secretary whip after making an error during the tabulation of the bloc vote on a ministry on Budget 2018 last week.

In a statement on Monday (Nov 27), he said the resignation was made “with immediate effect” as a matter of principle.

He added that his decision has already been conveyed to the party chief whip, Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul.

“The omission of YB Stampin was not purposely done. It was a human error,” he added.


He has also met Tan to personally convey his apology, which was similarly accepted.

“The officers are suppose to assist. They did the calculation together with me, but they didn’t highlight any omissions and failed to double check,” said Manivannan.

He added that the Speaker agreed that the counting system is flawed.

"I have suggested for a better calculation system of bloc voting in the future," he added.

Manivannan had failed to sign off on Tan's vote when he called for the bloc vote last week. This led to Tan's vote being dismissed.

With Tan's extra vote, Pakatan Harapan could have brought the division vote on the Supply Bill portion for the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to a tie. The vote ended with 52 supporting the it and 51 against and two abstaining.
