GEORGE TOWN: Survivors of the bus collision that claimed eight lives in Juru said there was panic and pandemonium on the first bus even before the accident occurred.
“Something was wrong with the engine and exhaust fumes filled the inside of the bus, choking us,” said survivor Sahfitri, 19, from Medan.
“Many of us shouted ‘Uncle, Uncle! There’s a lot of smoke!’ But the driver kept going.”
The smoke was so thick that they could hardly breathe, she said at Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Sahfitri, who was warded with injuries to her head and feet, said the friend who jumped survived.

“The bus then stopped and we rushed out. The other bus hit us while we were getting out,” she added.
Her colleague Fibar Ais, 19, said she was asleep in the front row when she was awakened by the smell of smoke.
“I was only half awake when I saw someone run to the front. The bus then stopped and everyone started running out.
“But before I could get up, there was a big crash and I was thrown forward. I hit my head and blacked out,” she said.
One side of the rear of their bus was destroyed in the collision.
Sahfitri’s sister Sri Wahyuni, 41, said all the dead Indonesians were from Medan and were her friends.
“They hated the factory buses. Every day when they came back from work, they complained about the bus rides and told me how dangerous it was,” she said while waiting outside the mortuary, where post-mortems were being conducted on the victims.
Sri Wahyuni was one of the earliest to arrive at Seberang Jaya Hospital, where all eight of the dead passengers were sent.
“My friends who died were at the back of the bus. I saw some of their bodies arrive.
“I was told that many of them died from broken necks,” she said between sobs.
