Scam alert: Beware of WhatsApp Gold
PETALING JAYA: WhatsApp users should beware of messages asking users to download an exclusive WhatsApp Gold version that actually infects users' phones with malware.
Users have reportedly received messages "inviting" them to download the "secret" version that is only used by big celebrities.
The invitation claims that WhatsApp Gold has advanced features like video calling, deleting messages sent by mistake, sending more than a hundred pictures at once, free calling and changing WhatsApp themes.
It claims that WhatsApp Gold can be activated through invitation only, and once activated the green WhatsApp icon will turn gold enabling users to enjoy all the new features.
To download Whatsapp Gold, users are linked to a website to download the program.
However, before users are able to download the app, they are asked to send out invites to five groups and 10 WhatsApp friends.
However, downloading the app from the website will infect your phone with malware, possibly allowing cyber-criminals to steal your data or track your activity.
Users should keep in mind that there is only one version of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp Gold cannot be downloaded from the Apple App store or Google Play store.
WhatsApp Gold is similar to scams like WhatsApp Plus.
WhatsApp acknowledged that users may have received spam from an unauthorised third party and not WhatsApp.
"We work diligently to reduce any spam messages that come through our system. Creating a safe space for users to communicate with one another is a priority," says WhatsApp in its FAQ.
"Unwanted messages from unauthorised third parties come in many forms, such as spam, hoax and phishing messages," it said.
