KUALA LUMPUR: Police are on the hunt for two thieves who escaped after a close brush with the law at Taman Sri Sinar here.
The two men were spotted leaving a restaurant and getting into a car by police around 8pm on Wednesday.
Sentul OCPD Asst Comm R. Munusamy said the two thieves noticed policemen approaching their car from behind and reversed quickly to try and ram them.
"My men fired a shot at one of the tyres to try and stop them but the suspects sped off despite the punctured tyre," he said at a press conference at Sentul police headquarters yesterday.
Police gave chase and discovered the duo had abandoned the car about two kilometres from the restaurant and had fled on foot.
ACP Munusamy said police had tracked down the two men to the restaurant after arresting two of their accomplices at Damansara earlier the same day.
"In the earlier arrests, we seized a stolen car. The abandoned car was also stolen recently," he said.
ACP Munusamy said police found various tools that the police believed were used for house break-ins in the abandoned car.
He added that stolen items like laptops, tablets and a mobile phone were found in the car along with money in various currencies.
ACP Munusamy added that the group had been active for about two months based on initial investigations.
Meanwhile, police arrested two men believed to be thieves during a routine patrol in Jinjang on Thursday.
The two men, were spotted acting suspiciously and sped off on a motorcycle when policemen approached them.
"My men gave chase and managed to arrest them after a short pursuit," he said.
A check showed that the two men had two pellet-firing fake pistols, a pair of handcuffs and a spanner.
ACP Munusamy said police are checking if the two have been impersonating policemen while conducting their criminal activities.
