Stop denying slurs against Indians and Chinese, Guan Eng tells Umno man

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 2 — Umno Permatang Pauh division chief Datuk Mohd Zaidi Said should simply admit to reports of him insulting the Chinese and Indians as there are video recordings of him making the statements, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Brushing aside the Umno leader’s claims that he was misreported and misquoted, Lim played one such video of Zaidi’s speech made during the Umno General Assembly last week.
In the portion, Zaidi is shown saying: “Kekuatan orang Cina kadang-kadang dijana melalui perniagaan haram, perjudian, pelacuran... (The strength of the Chinese are sometimes generated from illegal businesses such gambling and prostitution”.
“He clearly said ‘kekuatan orang Cina’, (strength of the Chinese) so he is referring to the Chinese, if not all, at least half of them,” Lim accused.
He also pointed out another instance where Mohd Zaidi mentioned “Cina akan takut (The Chinese will be afraid), which Lim said clearly referred to the Chinese again.
Yesterday, Mohd Zaidi denied accusing all Chinese in Penang of gaining power from vice activities, claiming his speech was taken out of context by certain media.
He insisted he had only meant “some” Chinese when he used the word “kadang-kadang” (sometimes) in his sentence.
Today, Lim also claimed Mohd Zaidi had insulted the Indians during his speech.
“He insulted the Chinese twice in his speech and he also insulted the Indians by referring to them as ‘keling’,” he said.
Keling” is considered a derogatory term used to describe the ethnic Indians in Malaysia.
Mohd Zaidi came under fire from the Penang state government and also from MCA and Gerakan leaders after reports of his speech alleged the political strength of the Penang Chinese come from vice businesses like prostitution and illegal gambling.
Numerous police reports by DAP and MCA leaders have been lodged against Mohd Zaidi, but Lim said he does not expect that any action will be taken against the Umno man over the remarks.
