PUTRAJAYA: A three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal that allowed Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's appeal clarified that today's judgment was not influenced by outside opinions.
Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, who headed the panel, said the matter was raised by the prosecution during the appeal submission proceedings of the case previously.
He said the statement was rather mischievous and unnecessary.
"The court has never exceeded the scope of this trial. This decision is solely based on the record of the appeal.
We never take into account any opinion from outside the court as it can create defamation against the way the court decides.
"The court's decision is based entirely on the record of the appeal and is limited to this trial. This is for people who do not know how the court makes decisions," he said.
Earlier, the Court of Appeal acquitted Syed Saddiq of his conviction and seven-year jail sentence as well as two lashes for the offences of abetting breach of trust, misuse of property and money laundering involving Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (ARMADA) funds.
Ahmad Zaidi, who was sitting with Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin, unanimously allowed the former Youth and Sports Minister's appeal to set aside the conviction and sentence.
