WASHINGTON: Elon Musk has left President Donald Trump's administration after his term as Special Government Official ended.

A White House official confirmed that Musk's "off-boarding" process had begun on Wednesday night.

Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), plays a key role in efforts to reduce waste and reorganize the federal bureaucracy.

In a statement on social media platform X, he thanked Trump for the opportunity given to him to “reduce unnecessary spending” and stated that DOGE’s mission will continue to grow.
Musk's resignation comes a day after he criticized the Trump-backed tax and spending bill, known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act".

In an interview with CBS News , Musk stated that he was "disappointed to see this massive spending bill, which not only increases the budget deficit but also undermines the efforts being made by the DOGE team".

Trump, in a statement in the Oval Office, defended the bill by saying it was the result of complex political negotiations.

"I'm not happy with some aspects of this bill, but I'm very excited about the tax cuts that are being introduced," he said.

Musk, who was a strong Trump supporter and donated more than $250 million to the president's re-election campaign, now appears to be distancing himself from the administration. His departure raises questions about the future of the relationship between technology and politics in the United States.
