NEW DELHI: An Indian Coast Guard helicopter crashed on Sunday in the western Indian state of Gujarat, killing all three crew members including two pilots, according to police, Xinhua reported.

The Dhruv Latest Light Helicopter (ALH) crashed during a routine training flight at Porbandar airport, about 416 km west of Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat.

According to officials, the helicopter experienced technical problems before crashing.

All three crew members were immediately removed from the scene and rushed to hospital with severe burns after the helicopter caught fire shortly after crashing.

"Unfortunately, all three crew members have died as a result of this accident," said senior Porbandar police officer Bhagirath Singh Jadeja.

According to Jadeja, the accident occurred at around 12.10 pm (local time) when the helicopter was trying to land at Porbandar airport.

Indian police and the Coast Guard are investigating the cause of the crash, he said.

A local television channel broadcast footage of thick black smoke visible from the helicopter that crashed at the airport.
