KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested one of the two suspects who attempted to flee a police check along Jalan Genting Klang here on Monday (June 1) afternoon, says city police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.

"A police team from Wangsa Maju was conducting conditional movement control order (MCO) compliance checks, when they spotted the two men behaving suspiciously on a motorcycle, ” said Comm Mazlan.

He added that the team tried to stop the suspects, but they ignored the police and sped off heading to Jalan Ampang.

"They chased the suspects, who were showing hand gestures as if to challenge the police," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 2).

He said when the suspects reached the Jalan Ampang interchange near Tasik Ampang Hilir, the suspects started riding into oncoming traffic and lost control of the motorcycle and crashed at the road shoulder.

"When police personnel tried to arrest one of the suspects, he began behaving aggressively and a scuffle ensued. The pillion rider managed to flee the scene by jumping into a large drain there," he said.

He said the suspect also tested positive for methamphetamines and has two prior criminal records for drug related crimes and was wanted in connection with a house break-in at Ampang.

"The suspect has been remanded for four days as police track the whereabouts of the other suspect, ” said Comm Mazlan.

Comm Mazlan added that they have opened investigations under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from dispensing their duties.

A video of the arrest has gone viral on social media showing one of the policemen kicking the suspect.

It also shows another policeman falling of his motorcycle while trying to get off his machine and calm down his colleague.

On the viral video, Comm Mazlan said that an internal investigation is underway to ensure that there were no violations of standard operating procedures during the arrest.

He said that stern action would be taken against any officer or personnel found guilty of violating the standard operating procedure.

Those with information on the case should contact Asst Supt Stephen Ganeson at 016-376 7739 or Sjn Jeganathan Superma at 019-931 5851.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 -- Police chased for about 18 kilometres for two drug suspects on a motorcycle before apprehending one of them near Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir near here.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim, in a statement, said the suspect, who turned aggressive, was arrested after a scuffle with the police.

He said this in response to a 13-second video of the arrest, which has gone viral on social media, showing a policeman kicking the suspect near Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir, yesterday.

Mazlan said in the 4.45 pm incident yesterday, a police team checking on public compliance with regulations on the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Jalan Genting Klang spotted the two men behaving suspiciously on a motorcycle.

He said the suspects sped off on their motorcycle when approached by the policemen.

"The suspects were making hand gestures as if to challenge the police," he said.

Mazlan said on reaching the Jalan Ampang interchange near Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir, the motorcylist rode the machine against traffic flow before losing control of the motorcycle, causing the machine to skid at the road shoulder.

"The motorcyclist was arrested, but the pillion rider managed to flee by jumping into a large drain,” he added.

Mazlan said the suspect who was arrested had two previous criminal records for a drug-related offence and house-breaking.

The suspect also tested positive for syabu, said Mazlan, adding that the suspect is in remand for four days.

He said an internal inquiry is being carried out to ensure that there was no violation of standard operating procedures during the arrest of the suspect

In another development, Mazlan confirmed the death of a 37-year-old Nepali in the police custody last Sunday. The Nepali was detained on May 27 for failing to produce his identification documents.

He said investigations revealed that there were no elements of crime or misconduct in the death of the foreigner. The Nepali Embassy has since been informed of the incident.
