KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak received over RM1 million as special payment from the government following his fall from power in May last year, the High Court hearing his money laundering and criminal breach of trust case was told today.

Deputy chief accountant in the Prime Minister’s Department, Zarinah Yusuf, said the former prime minister received RM1,017,014.39 in May as special payment made to all outgoing prime ministers.

For his last nine days in office, he was paid a pro-rated sum of RM6,627.09 as salary.

As prime minister, Najib was paid a salary of RM22,826.65, in addition to RM16,000 as the Pekan MP and RM3,846 as leader of the Dewan Rakyat.

“His total monthly salary which is inclusive of other allowances is RM58,605.15,” Zarinah told the High Court when questioned by deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Izzat Fauzan.

Another witness, Parliament staff member Farah Nurdiana Azhar, told the court that an MP is entitled to receive RM27,700 as allowance.

“However, from January 2015, MPs who are members of the administration are only paid RM16,000,” she said.

The court was also told that as deputy prime minister from January to March 2009, Najib’s monthly earning was RM48,681.65 which includes RM18,168,18 in monthly salary.

Both witnesses said the salary and allowance were remitted into Najib’s account in Affin Bank.

He is charged with committing the offences at AmIslamic Bank Bhd in Jalan Raja Chulan and the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya between Aug 17, 2011, and Feb 10, 2015.
