SINGAPORE: A Malaysian man convicted of murder was hanged in Singapore despite an eleventh-hour appeal from the Malaysian government and his family to commute his sentence to life in prison.

The execution of Michael Garing, 30, yesterday was confirmed by the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore, Bernama reported.

Garing was convicted of murder by the Singapore High Court in 2015 for killing an Indian national in 2010.

An appeal against the conviction was rejected in 2017 by a three-person appellate court.

A murder conviction mandates the death penalty in Singapore and can only be halted if clemency is granted by the president.

Garing’s family had hand-delivered an urgent clemency petition to Singapore President Halimah Yacob on Wednesday, pleading for his life to be spared, according to N. Surendran, adviser to Malaysian human rights group Lawyers for Liberty.

“We humbly ask the President of Singapore for mercy and compassion to spare the life of our son,” the petition had stated.

“We do not want to excuse our son’s offence, but we ask for mercy.”

On Thursday, Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed said the government was striving to commute the death sentence.

Garing was part of a four-member group from Sarawak that went on a brutal seven-hour robbery spree in Singapore in May 2010.

Armed with a 58cm-long machete, he killed the Indian national by slitting his throat.

Three other victims were seriously injured in the rampage.
