Khalid to call it a day as IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: After four years of helming the police force, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar will go on mandatory retirement when he turns 60 on Sept 5.

Khalid, who has served the force for 41 years, confirmed this when contacted today.

The country's top cop joined the force in 1976 and had served as Negri Sembilan and Selangor police chief between 2005 and 2010 before his appointment as IGP in May, 2013.

It is understood that his deputy, Tan Sri Nor Rashid Ibrahim will succeed him.

Speculation is also rife that Special Branch director Datuk Fuzi Harun will assume the post of deputy inspector-general.

There is also talk that federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff will be appointed as head of the Special Branch.

Mokhtar turned 60 last week and was to go on mandatory retirement but was asked to stay on in the force at the eleventh hour and was given a one-year extension on his contract.

Announcements on the changes and new appointments to the leadership of the police force will be made next week.
