PETALING JAYA: The husband of a pregnant women with Zika has been confirmed as the fourth patient to be infected by the disease.

According to Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the 25-year-old patient had tested positive for Zika and is now being warded at Government hospital in Johor Baru.

The Ministry said that the man, who resides in Johor Baru with his wife, had traveled to Singapore daily for work.

“The patient has no other close contacts in Malaysia other than his mother-in-law and his wife,” said Noor Hisham in a press release on Saturday.



Noor Hisham also said that measures have been taken to control the spread of the disease in the all the areas that the patient had previously visited in Johor.

"Around 445 houses were inspected, larvicide was used in 95 premises, thermal fogging was carried out on 203 premises and ULV (cold fogging) fogging had been conducted in 870 premises,” said Noor Hisham.

He added that no other individual living close to the patient’s residence had exhibited symptoms of the disease.

Noor Hisham said that until the number of confirmed Zika cases in Malaysia as of September 9 stands at four cases.

He also added that 39 other suspected Zika cases in the country had tested negative for the disease.

Noor Hisham also advised the public to take preventive measures to avoid being bitten by the Aedes mosquito.

“The public is advised to adopt personal protective measures against mosquito bites by using (mosquito) repellents and wearing bright coloured clothing that covers the entire body,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Ministry said that the patient’s 27-year-old wife had become the first pregnant woman in the country to test positive for Zika.

She is currently three to four months pregnant.

Two cases of people who contracted the Zika virus were reported earlier, one in Selangor and another in Sabah.
