After repeatedly assaulting a 96-year-old woman, this foreign domestic helper will have 10 months of her life in jail.
Murni Penengsih, Indonesian National, was assigned to take care of the bedridden patient since December 2013. The patient has diabetes and weak kidneys with sign of dementia.
But just this Sept 17, the physical abuse was found out by the victim’s daughter after seeing a CCTV video. It shows their maid repeatedly hit her mother. She instantly confronted the domestic helper upon seeing the CCTV footage and decided to file a police report.
The same suspect was caught hitting the old woman’s face last July 2014 but promised to never do it again. But before Sept. 17, the daughter found several bruises on her mother’s body and also said that someone is threatening her life. But because of her old age, the daughter thought that everything is just her mother’s imagination. She also thought that the maid likes her mother and is doing her job right.
Last Aug. 2015, the suspect allegedly hit the victim with a water bottle while feeding her then pushed her head hard when she tried to move it.
In the video, the maid was also seen repeatedly slapped in the face, grabbed in the ears and hands pressed hard in the pillow.
Diana Ngiam, Defence lawyer, said that the maid is actually suffering from adjustment disorder. This is according to the psychiatric test performed on the maid. She also said that the main had to do difficult tasks which made her act that way.
On the other hand, Low Wee Ping, District Judge, said that their main concern is the victim’s old age and that they might not be able to comprehend any harm inflicted on them.
The punishment for the committed crime is 2 years jail time and a total of $5,000 fine.
