KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested four people between July 29 and Aug 14 for lodging false reports claiming that they were mugged in the city centre.
Those nabbed include an employee of a credit card company, in his 30s, who made a false report meant to be used as an excuse to his employer for going missing during working hours.
Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainol Samah said the four suspects were investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code, and their investigation papers have been submitted to deputy public prosecutor’s office.
He said one of the suspects was charged in court on Monday, another expected to be brought to court tomorrow (Friday), while the rest will be charged soon.
"Between July and August, the district police found that four people had lodged false reports.
"One of them was found to have lodged the report because he went missing from work to run a personal errand, and used the report saying that he was robbed as an excuse.
"Another man in his 20s claimed that he was robbed on June 10 because he had lost his money, and wanted to ask for financial assistance from police.
"Two others, including a woman, lost their MyKad and lodged false reports, claiming they were robbed, to avoid from being penalised by the National Registration Department (NRD)," he said during a press conference at the district police headquarters, here, earlier today.
According to facts of the case provided, the credit card company worker based in Jalan Raja Chulan, here, lodged his report about noon on July 29 saying that he was mugged at gunpoint by two men clad in what looked like police uniforms, at an alley beside Menara Standard Chartered, Jalan Sultan Ismail.
The man claimed that he lost RM6,000 to the robbers who came on a Yamaha 125Z motorcycle.
Zainol said police investigators during questioning later learnt that the man's report was false. He had actually used his working hours to redeem his valuables at a pawnshop, and wanted an excuse to cover his disappearing act.
The second case happened on Aug 10 when the man in his 20s, who lost his money to pickpockets, lodged a report about 5am claiming that he was mugged at Jalan Hang Lekir by two men in a Proton Waja bearing the police logo.
Police then reviewed CCTV recordings at the area between the time frame of 4pm and 8pm, when the 'victim' claimed that he was robbed but could not find either him or the said car.
The third case involved a woman who claimed that she was robbed at an alley near Low Yat Plaza in Bukit Bintang on Aug 12. However, police later found that she lodged a false report as an excuse to replace her lost MyKad.
In the fourth case, a man in his 40s claimed that he was robbed by three men while walking along Jalan Ampang on Aug 14. The man later confessed to investigators that he made the story up after losing his wallet while taking a shower at a construction site in Jalan Ampang.
"I urge members of the public not to lodge false police report, as we take every report seriously and conduct thorough investigations into each case.
"Some people think that they can save RM300 (from being fined by the NRD) by making up stories that they were robbed or became victim of snatch thieves.
"It is our duty to investigate every report received, and if we find that a report is falsely made, police will take action."
