KUALA LUMPUR: Pricey clothes and fancy undergarments stolen from a shopping mall have landed a single mother in jail for 20 days at the Magistrates Court here.
Unemployed Norlida Muhammad, 31 and her sister Noramira Muhammad, 20 pleaded guilty to shoplifting on Sunday.
The two sisters were believed to have stolen several pairs of jeans, blouses, bras, panties and corsets worth RM1,147.
They were believed to have committed the crime at Aeon Jusco Maluri, Cheras, here at about 4.30pm on Dec 13.
Prior to sentencing, magistrate Nur Aminahtul Mardhiah Md Nor asked Norlida: “Why did you steal?”
“I am a single mother,” said Norlida.
“There are many single mothers, but they do not steal,” replied Nur Aminahtul.
“These are not daily supplies. I would have understood if you had stolen baby formula,” she continued.
According to the statement of facts, the sisters failed to show proof of payment after a shopping mall worker saw them suspiciously choosing the clothes before entering a changing room.
Both of them were caught as they were making their way to the parking lot.
The court set Jan 19 for Noramira’s sentencing pending her social report from the welfare department due to her young age and she was granted RM1,500 bail
