KUALA LUMPUR: The early morning calm of Umno delegates, entering the hall at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur for the last day of the party’s Annual General Assembly, was shattered when they were each handed a 28-page booklet,” Aku Bukan Petualang.. Berani Kerana Benar.”
The booklet relates, among others, Umno Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassin’s experience after he was sacked as Deputy Prime Minister following his critical remarks in public on the twin mega scandals, the RM2.6 billion political “donation” controversy and the RM42 billion 1MDB scandal.
The booklet opens with Muhyiddin’s political history and service from the first time he joined the ruling party to his term as Johor Menteri Besar and going on to his dismissal from the Cabinet on July 28.
The booklet mentions that Muhyiddin urged Abdullah Badawi, who succeeded Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister, to step down in favour of then Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
In a section in a reference to him as MP for the Pagoh parliamentary seat, Muhyiddin wrote that he was being vocal out of concern for the welfare of the people.
In another section, “If 1MDB falls, BN will die”, Muhyiddin revealed his conversation with Najib regarding the state-owned firm. “The Prime Minister asked why the people had to make a fuss just because he borrowed money from the bank,” disclosed Muhyiddin.
“For every sen we (government) borrow, the burden would be on the people to pay back,” pointed out Muhyiddin in the booklet. “The people, including the next generation, will have to carry the burden of repaying government borrowings.”
Muhyiddin also revealed that the Prime Minister was not happy with him when it was suggested that he (Najib) should not head the 1MDB Board of Advisors as it could result in him being investigated. “I voiced out not to topple anyone but to save my party.”
“People ask me whether I am afraid that I would be sacked from the party. I never did anything against the party’s constitution.”
Another question has surfaced, he continued, on why he doesn’t just leave Umno and start a new party. “Think carefully. There are a lot of stories where a new party was formed today, and the next day they just disappeared.”
He concluded his booklet with a pledge that he would not be silenced (on anything) as his main priorities were the country and the people.
