MIRI: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced an Indonesian man to a total of 72 years in prison and 20 strokes of the rotan for raping an underage girl.

Judge Marutin Pagan imposed the sentence on Mohammad Haznal Fauzi Sumardi, 39, from Central Java, after he pleaded guilty to four counts of raping the 11-year-old girl at a house in Marudi, Baram last year.
He received 18 years in jail and five strokes of the rotan for each charge.

All charges fall under Section 376 (2)(b) of the Penal Code, which carries a minimum of five years and maximum of 30 years in jail as well as whipping.

The accused raped the victim in January, July, November and Dec 21 last year.

Mohammad Haznal was also charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amendment 2002).
He was sentenced to four months in prison and two strokes of the rotan for entering the state without possessing valid documents.

The judge ordered for the sentences to run concurrently and for Mohammad Haznal to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation after serving his sentence
