Pahang crown prince Tengku Abdullah (pic) is the new president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) after garnering 27 votes against Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim who received 12 votes in the second round of voting.
Voting for the top post in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) entered the second round today after neither of the candidates obtained a two-thirds majority in the first round.
In the first round, Tengku Abdullah had obtained 24 votes and Tunku Ismail 15.
A two-thirds majority is needed to secure the FAM presidency while in the second round, the winner needs a simple majority.
FAM is meeting today at The Holiday Inn, Glenmarie, to elect its new office-bearers for the 2014-18 term.
Tengku Abdullah takes over from his father, Sultan Ahmad Shah, who had withdrawn from contesting the top post.
The 83-year-old Sultan was elected FAM president in 1984.
Announcing his decision during his speech at the 50th FAM Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Sultan Ahmad Shah had said that he wanted to make way for younger leaders.
He had admitted that 30 years at the helm was a long period, and said he had tried his best to improve Malaysian football.
"But due to my age, the fact is that football needs new breath of fresh air," he had said.
Brig-Gen Datuk Norhuda Ahmad and Normal Md Yusof also created history by being the first women elected to the exco.
Thirty-nine delegates representing 14 state football associations, as well as the Armed Forces, Police (2), Melayu Malaysia (2), Cina Malaysia (2), Malaysian Indian Sports Council, and the Football Coaches Association Malaysia, were eligible to vote today. – May 25, 2014.
