KUALA LUMPUR: Tonight's UMNO Supreme Working Council (MKT) meeting agreed to dissolve Parliament in the near future, to enable the 15th General Election (GE15) to be held this year as well.

UMNO Secretary General Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said, based on the decision, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will present the dissolution date to the Yang di-Pertua Agong in accordance with Article 40(1) of the Federal Constitution.

He said the decision was based on UMNO's consistent stance from the beginning to return the people's mandate that was delayed due to COVID-19, after the Pakatan Harapan government 'collapsed' due to internal strife.

"Accordingly, all party machinery at every level has been instructed to finalize all the preparations made before to enter the dissolution phase until the date of the 15th General Election," he added.

Ahmad said, UMNO believes that only by restoring the people's rights to enable the real mandate to be obtained, then a stable government can be formed to restore the country.

He said the matter is important, especially in the economic aspect which is closely related to the issue of their well-being, in addition to several efforts to reform institutions towards creating better governance for the country.

Ahmad, who is also a Member of Parliament for Pontian, said this to a press conference after the UMNO MKT meeting chaired by party President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at Menara Dato' Onn, tonight.

Earlier today, senior leaders of the party, known as the 'Top 5', held a discussion on the date of the dissolution of Parliament .

In addition to Ahmad Zahid, the Top 5 also includes Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and three Vice Presidents besides Ismail Sabri, namely Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

In the meantime, Ahmad said, the MKT also welcomed the Cabinet's decision to order further investigation and legal action to be taken immediately by relevant enforcement agencies to investigate the misconduct of former Attorney General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas.

"The meeting also called for the Report of the Special Task Force to Investigate Tommy Thomas' book entitled "My Story: Justice In the Wilderness" to be made public immediately.

"This is important to restore the image and integrity of the judicial institution and the rule of law of the country, such as the example found in page 342 of the book which is likely to violate Section 32 of the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2009," he said.

In addition, Ahmad said, UMNO also upholds the order of the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar on 15 May 2022, who wanted the special task force's investigation report on the Batu Putih sovereignty issue to be immediately presented and disclosed to the public because it involved matters of national dignity and sovereignty.

The MKT meeting, Ahmad further said, had accepted the resignation of Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique as Chairman of the UMNO Disciplinary Board and agreed to appoint Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun as the new Chairman of the UMNO Disciplinary Board.

Lastly, Ahmad explained, the MKT meeting also took note of the recent meeting between PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and Ahmad Zahid, but no details were given.
