Parliament dissolved today, returning the mandate to the people

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of Parliament effective today after the approval of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to make way for the 15th General Election (GE15).

The Prime Minister made the special announcement which was broadcast live across the country at 3pm this afternoon through television channels and social media.

"This is to inform you that yesterday afternoon I went to His Majesty, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and submitted a request letter to His Majesty, regarding the dissolution of the Parliament -14.

"In accordance with Article 40(2)(b) and Article 55(2) of the Federal Constitution, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, has acted according to His Majesty's discretion by granting my request, so that the 14th Parliament dissolved today, Monday 10 October 2022," he said.

Ismail Sabri said that he recommended the heads of state governments except Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka and Johor State Governments to take appropriate action, to dissolve their respective State Legislative Assemblies (DUN) on the same date as the Parliamentary level general election, although some states have decided not to dissolve their respective state assemblies.

He said, it should be implemented simultaneously to ensure that the people are not burdened in addition to the smoothness of the democratic process and to save costs.

"Meanwhile, the determination of the dates of candidate nomination day and voting day as well as other related matters, are subject to the decision of the Election Commission (SPR).

With this announcement, the mandate will be returned to the people. The people's mandate is a powerful antidote for the country to manifest political stability and create a strong, stable and respected government after GE15," he said.

The Prime Minister said that the process was based on the system of Parliamentary Democracy and Constitutional Monarchy as the cornerstone of government since the country achieved independence.

He said that the dissolution was carried out to discredit the voices that have been arguing for the legitimacy of the government, the government through the back door and the government through the roof.

"May the people use the power they have, to elect a government that is able to continue the implementation of the Malaysian Family Budget 2023, maintain political stability, restore and strengthen the economy and maintain the harmony and unity of the multi-religious, racial and ethnic Malaysian Family," he said.

Following the announcement of the dissolution of Parliament, the EC needs to set a date for the election to be held.

Article 55 (4) of the Federal Constitution stipulates that the GE must be held within 60 days from the date of dissolution of Parliament.
