Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, a Malaysian man found guilty of drug trafficking in Singapore has been hanged.
According to his brother Navin Kumar, 22, the death sentence was carried out early this morning.
He added that the funeral ceremony will be held in Ipoh as soon as his body is brought home today, Reuters reported .
Earlier the Singapore Court of Appeal on Tuesday dismissed a final appeal filed by Nagaethran's mother to challenge the decision to set aside the conviction and death sentence against her son.
The decision ended the 34 -year -old Malaysian's last -minute trial which was scheduled to be hanged on Wednesday (April 27) after the Court of Appeal upheld his death sentence last month.
Panchalai Supermaniam filed the application with the help of friends and activists without being represented by any lawyer.
Earlier, during the trial, Panchalai said through an interpreter: "I am his mother. I petitioned. We want him alive ... We need to get a lawyer for this case."
Hailing from Perak, Nagaenthran was sentenced to death in 2010 for trafficking 42.72g of heroin in 2009 to Singapore, which is known to be among the countries with the strictest narcotics laws in the world.
Nagaentran's case caught the attention of outsiders.
On Nov 7, 2021, it was reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had written a letter to his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong seeking relaxation in the case.
Meanwhile, on Dec 3, Singapore President Halimah Yacob said Nagaenthran had been given due legal process.
Nagaenthran's lawyer claimed his client was intellectually disabled.
He was supposed to be hanged on Nov 10, 2021, but obtained a temporary stay on Nov 9 after the court was told he was COVID-19 positive while appearing for the final appeal trial against his death sentence.
