No more going out without pepper spray
THE STAR
PETALING JAYA: Varsity student Cristal Chua is not taking any more chances with her safety. The newest addition to her purse is pepper spray.
Chua is still shaken over a recent incident in which she was groped in front of her rented condominium unit near Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) in Sungai Long, Kajang.
The 22-year-old mass communications student said she never leaves home without her pepper spray now.
“I felt uneasy when I walked to the campus alone today (yesterday).
“I have no plans to move out yet but my parents are quite worried about me,” she said.
At around 3.30pm on Tuesday, Chua and her university classmate Tammy Ong, 21, were walking to Chua’s place when a man appeared and “grabbed” Chua’s buttocks.
They said the man also tried to grab Ong’s breasts but fled when she shouted.
Heightened vigilance: Pepper spray is the latest addition to Chua's purse.
Chua whipped out her phone to record the attacker while Ong tried to give chase. The short and plump man wore a black jersey with the words “Mike” and “10” on the back.
Moments later, the girls related their ordeal via a live Facebook video.
“Tammy and I are proud because we did the right thing to increase awareness, especially among students, about cases like this.
“I know there are many other cases out there, but some choose not to speak out.
“Girls should not be bullied,” said Chua when interviewed.
Accompanied by Ong, she lodged a police report at the Sungai Long police station on the night of the incident.
Meanwhile, Utar will continue to advise and counsel its students on personal safety outside campus.
“We have talks by the police,” said a statement from the university.
“There are also safety campaigns for students, especially on personal safety tips while they are outside the campus.”
The university said safety was also a concerted effort among residents in housing areas, neighbourhood residential associations as well as the management of condos and the local communities.
“With the concerted efforts of all, we can bring greater awareness for a safer community for everyone.”
