Omicron variant: Transition to endemic phase temporarily paused - Hishammuddin BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 -- Efforts to transition to the endemic phase has been paused for a while as the government looks to find out more about the new COVID-19 variant - Omicron - which is said to be more contagious than the Delta variant.
Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the government had noted that as of now, the variant had not only spread in South Africa, but also to several other countries including Italy, Denmark, Australia, United Kingdom, Belgium and Hong Kong.
“Although we have not heard of any cases in our country to date, precautionary actions will continue to be implemented.
“We are concerned that everything that we had planned before this, the announcements on the relaxation of SOPs (standard operating procedures), the seven criteria that we hoped to announce in the near future on the endemic phase, all this may be affected if we do not monitor the spread of Omicron more closely,” he said at a press conference after the COVID-19 Ministerial Quartet Meeting at the Parliament building here today.
The government had previously set seven criteria that needed to be achieved before the Ministry of Health (MOH) could declare Malaysia as entering the endemic phase of living with the COVID-19 virus.
This includes the number of beds being utilised in hospitals, intensive care units (ICUs) and COVID-19 Low-Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centres (PKRCs); testing capacity at laboratories and the rate of COVID-19 positive cases.
Hishammuddin said the MOH was also seeking more information on the incubation period, symptoms and infectiousness of the Omicron variant, and would make an announcement on the matter soon.
In the meantime, he said the government would impose stricter border controls on countries where the new variant was prevalent.
Commenting on South African president Cyril Ramaphosa's call for the lifting of travel restrictions on the country, Hishammuddin said the decision was based on security risks and advice from the MOH.
“What the MOH has decided is not too different from what has been done by other countries out there, I believe the African countries understand that it (travel restriction) is not related to diplomacy or geopolitics, but about health.
"We do not want to jeopardise what we have been doing for one and a half years with irresponsible actions," he said.
Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday urged countries around the world to immediately lift the travel ban to the country, which he described as being ‘unjustified and unfair’
Meanwhile, on the risk of reopening the Malaysia-Singapore border via the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) following the spread of the new variant, Hishammuddin said it was being monitored.
“The Quartet meeting took note of the discussions between the two Prime Ministers (Malaysia and Singapore) on the potential of having more destinations (with the VTL implemented), such as Singapore to Penang, Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
"I have asked all parties to continue to think and discuss, but we will not make a decision until we know the real effects and impact of this new variant," he said.
Prosecution wrong to conclude donation to Yayasan Akalbudi was unlawful proceed - Lawyer BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution had erred in concluding that the entry of donations into the trustee account of Yayasan Akalbudi, a foundation owned by former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, involved illegal activities, the High Court heard today.
Lead defence lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik contended that the evidence by Omar Ali, that the monies came from Yayasan Al Bukhary was never investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
"It's quite clear that Omar Ali did not commit any banking offences under the banking laws. In the course of submissions, the prosecution has made a number of misconceptions.
"There is no direct evidence on where the money came from. Misconception must apply to no investigation," he said in his submission-in-reply at the end of the prosecution's case against Ahmad Zahid, who is facing 47 charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT), corruption and money laundering involving Yayasan Akalbudi funds.
Hisyam also said that the prosecution's action, which was based on the provisions of Section 4 (3) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001 and in concluding that there were illegal and wrongful activities in law, also had no basis.
According to the 27th money-laundering charge, Ahmad Zahid is alleged to have ordered the money changer to convert RM7,511,250.20 in cash into 35 cheques to be deposited into Yayasan Akalbudi to purchase fixed deposits in Maybank.
Meanwhile, Hisyam said the prosecution also agreed on the contribution by MyEG Services Sdn Bhd non-executive director Datuk Mohd Jimmy Wong Abdullah, who is the 78th prosecution witness, to the foundation.
Mohd Jimmy Wong, in his testimony, said he donated more than RM9 million to Yayasan Akalbudi on his own volition for welfare and religious purposes and it had nothing to do with his company, MyEG Services.
In this regard, Hisyam said since the prosecution failed to show that the money laundering process took place as an element in the charge, then the case against his client could not be defended.
Ahmad Zahid, 68, is facing 47 charges - 12 of CBT, eight of corruption and 27 of money laundering - involving tens of millions of ringgit belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi.
Hearing before judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah continues on Dec 6.
Employers must immediately hire foreign workers under RTK programme - Hamzah
BERNAMA
SEPANG, Nov 30 -- Employers have been given two weeks for the placement of 280,088 foreign workers who have registered under the Labour Recalibration Programme (RTK), said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
He said the Home Ministry (KDN) had called on the employers concerned to immediately employ the workers who have registered under the RTK programme and listed as legal foreign workers.
"I want to see that all of them are employed in our country and issued a valid PLKS (Temporary Employment Visit Pass). That's what we want to do," he told the media after launching the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) Satellite Centre (ESC) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), here today.
According to Hamzah, of the 280,088 foreign workers who have registered under the RTK programme, over 120,000 are involved in the plantation sector and the number only represents between 20 and 30 per cent of the labour required by the country's plantation sector.
On reports that the government had agreed to allow the entry of 32,000 foreign workers with special exemptions to meet the manpower needs of the plantation sector, especially oil palm, Hamzah said: "To be realistic, 32,000 is not enough for our plantations here, we actually need a much bigger number. "
Meanwhile he said although it has been announced that 32,000 foreign workers would be brought in, it has been over a month and not one has arrived.
No legal action against loan defaulters currently - Noh Omar BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 -- Agencies under the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development (MEDAC) will for now, not take legal action against entrepreneurs who fail to repay their loans.
Its minister, Tan Sri Noh Omar said this was not the time to take such action against entrepreneurs who were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, instead, they should be assisted in order to survive.
“We will not be taking legal action against them for now. To make them fold up their business or become bankrupt, no way. We’ll look into it after six months but now is not the time,” he said when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2022 (Budget 2022) at the committee level on MEDAC in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Noh said the ministry understood the situation of entrepreneurs impacted by the pandemic and were now rebuilding their businesses after the various forms of relaxation given by the government on the rules imposed earlier.
He said the agencies under MEDAC were meanwhile urged to reduce bureaucracy in approving loans for entrepreneurs to improve or revive their businesses.
“We will make improvements and I can help through the agencies under my ministry; whether it’s CTOS or CCRIS, it needs not be taken into account. Likewise, there should no charges or interest imposed,” he added.
On the future of would-be entrepreneurs undergoing courses with MEDAC, he said the ministry was making efforts that they be given grants to start a business, not just a certificate upon completing their course.
"If the grants are insufficient, they can be given a loan under the Entrepreneur Group Economic Fund (TEKUN),” he said.
Noh also said that in the last three months, MEDAC assisted 220,241 entrepreneurs and cooperatives to revive their businesses, exceeding the original target of 188,345 entrepreneurs.
The Dewan Rakyat then approved the estimated management expenditure for MEDAC at RM195,036,300 after 22 parliamentarians debated on the bill at the committee level.
Gov't introduced recalibration programmes, not legalising foreign workers - Saravanan
BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR: There is no plan to legalise foreign workers, instead the government has introduced the Return Recalibration Programme and Labour Recalibration Programme for the group, said Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan.
He said the recalibration programmes were introduced for foreign workers who had valid documents but lost their jobs after their employers went out of business.
"We introduced the Labour Recalibration to enable them to continue working and the Return Recalibration for those who want to return home," he said when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2022 (Budget 2022) at the committee level for the ministry in the Dewan Rakyat, today.
A total of 22 Members of Parliament from the government, opposition and independent blocs participated in the debate.
An estimated operating expenditure of RM835,666,800 was later approved to the Ministry of Human Resources in the 2022 Budget.
ESC speeds issue of expatriate immigration passes - Hamzah
BERNAMA
SEPANG, Nov 30 -- Expatriates arriving in Malaysia through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) can now obtain Immigration pass stickers at the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) Satellite Centre at the airport upon arrival, said Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
He said that under the old system, expatriates may take up to 30 days to obtain an Immigration pass sticker to be allowed to work in Malaysia.
Hamzah, when officiating the ESD Satellite Centre (ESC) today, said that the facility would speed up and ease doing business in Malaysia.
“This ESC is an improvement in services for expatriates and investors who come to Malaysia,” he said.
Under the old system, expatriates who have obtained an Immigration pass approval letter while abroad are given a 30-day Special Pass, and within 30 days the employer has to make an appointment at the Immigration office for the process of issuing Immigration pass stickers for expatriates and making payment.
During the 30-day period, these expatriates could not work until the sticker was issued by the Immigration office.
Through the ESC facility, expatriates get an Immigration pass approval letter after applying while abroad and can complete the payment online before they come to Malaysia; they can then get an Immigration pass sticker at the KLIA ESC upon arrival.
Hamzah, meanwhile, said that the Home Ministry was conducting a comprehensive and holistic study involving expatriates, including studying expatriate positions, in an effort to meet the need for the transfer of expertise and technology into the country.
He added that expatriates admitted into the country now consist of Employment Pass category 1 (EP1) which is top management, such as the managing director of the company; as well as Employment Pass category 2 (EP2) and Employment Pass category 3 (EP3) which include lower management personnel.
Based on statistics from the Immigration Department, there are 86,280 active expatriates in the country now, and of that number, 40,948 are from the EP1 category who hold top management positions, he said.
He said that Indian expatriates were the most numerous working and living in Malaysia, followed by China, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
Asked whether the ESC facility would be expanded to other airports in the country, Hamzah said that currently, the ESC would only operate at the arrival hall of the KLIA main terminal, 24 hours a day.
“For now, we will use here (KLIA) first because most of the expatriates come through KLIA,” he said.

Merdeka 118 tower a great engineering achievement for Malaysia - PM Ismail Sabri
BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of the Merdeka 118 tower amid the COVID-19 pandemic marks a great engineering achievement for the country and reinforces Malaysia's position as a modern and developed nation.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he was informed Merdeka 118 would be the first tower in the country to receive triple platinum green ratings in international sustainability certification as well as the prestigious WELL certification.
(The WELL Building Standard takes a holistic approach to health in the built environment addressing behaviour, operations and design.)
"This makes Merdeka 118 the industry benchmark in Malaysia as an iconic tower of the future," he said at the Merdeka 118 tower spire completion ceremony here today.
Ismail Sabri said the construction of Merdeka 118 would also benefit the Malaysian Family as the precinct would be a new economic catalyst for Kuala Lumpur.
"It will complement other areas that are rapidly developing such as KLCC and KL Sentral.
"The development of Merdeka 118 will also provide opportunities to the local community, especially in nearby areas such as Petaling Street, Kampung Attap and Pudu, to generate the economy," he said.
The prime minister said it was also seen as bearing the Keluarga Malaysia spirit as, apart from offering opportunities for the local community to develop their business, they could also hold programmes and activities to make the areas surrounding Merdeka 118 more attractive through the Merdeka 118 Community Grants Programme.
On the Merdeka 118 grants which were open for applications from June 28 to Aug 20, 2021, he said the Malaysian Family could have applied for three types of grants -- Sports, Arts and Business Community -- and this directly promoted the Malaysian Family's participation in sharing ideas to reactivate the community to create more socioeconomic growth opportunities.
Meanwhile, Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) president and group chief executive Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn said that Merdeka 118 was a development spanning 40 acres (16.2 hectares), half of which comprised Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara.
"Merdeka 118 has achieved 85 per cent completion, and the tower floor installation has reached the 118th floor while the glass panel installation has reached the 114th floor.
"Despite facing pandemic challenges, I am proud to report that the tower and upgrading of surrounding infrastructure is on track to be completed by end-2022," he added.
Omicron variant probably more transmissible than Delta, says Khairy BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR: The new COVID-19 B.1.1.529 variant, now named Omicron is probably more transmissible than the Delta variant, but it is not yet known how virulent the virus is, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
"We know Omicron is probably more transmissible than Delta but we don't yet know its virulence.
"What we can do in the meantime is step up public health interventions (masks, distancing, hygiene), improve indoor airflow, keep our aged safe and take a booster when offered," he said in his Twitter account today.
Last Friday, Khairy announced that Malaysians have been banned from traveling to seven countries, namely South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe following the emergence of the new COVID-19 strain.
Khairy said it was an effort by the government to enhance border prevention and control measures, including for travellers arriving at the country's entry points, effective tomorrow.
He said three countries have reported Omicron-related cases so far, namely South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong.
Four enforcement personnel arrested over booze heist
BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR: Four enforcement agency personnel were among six individuals arrested on suspicion of being involved in stealing alcoholic beverages on Thursday.
All the suspects in their 20s to 40s were detained around Dengkil and Shah Alam near here.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the four enforcement personnel were believed to have helped the syndicate by leaking information on the storage facility of liquor that had been confiscated.
He said two other male suspects were believed to have entered the facility in Dengkil using a lorry at about 2.30 am.
“The suspects tied up the security guards before unloading the beverages kept in a lorry into their own lorry,“ he said at a press conference after officiating the Gombak district police headquarters here today.
Mazlan said the unloading process took about two hours before the suspects escaped with the items at 5 am.
He said investigations revealed that the robbery involved ‘insiders’ of the enforcement agency.
“Following that, police arrested four enforcement personnel suspected of providing information to the syndicate,“ he added.
Mazlan said police also found Captagon pills weighing two kilogrammes, 47 Erimin 5 pills and 4.9 grammes of cocaine, all estimated to be worth RM559,899.
He said they also confiscated electronic scales, mobile phones and RM111,100 in cash found in the vehicle of the enforcement personnel.
Mazlan said as a result of the interrogation, police arrested a lorry driver and his co-driver, and seized a lorry by the roadside in Shah Alam.
“After inspecting the lorry, police also found 234 boxes of Brona brand liquor believed to be stolen from the storage area,” he said adding that the suspects were remanded for six days until tomorrow to assist in investigations under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code and Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He added that police were now tracking down another suspect still at large, believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate.
"Jualan Keluarga Malaysia" to offer goods cheaper by 15 to 20 per cent - Nanta BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 -- A sales promotion, “Jualan Keluarga Malaysia” (Malaysian Family Sale), will be held in all the 222 parliamentary constituencies twice a month on a monthly basis beginning Dec 4 as part of the government’s efforts to ensure consumers get necessities at cheaper prices.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ministry had obtained the cooperation of all agencies involved to ensure the sales promotion meet the target.
"At this sale, we will ensure the price of basic necessities is 15 per cent to 20 per cent cheaper,” he said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to a question from Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) who wanted to know action taken by the ministry to bring down the surge in the price of goods.
Nanta said the ministry had also mobilised more than 1,000 officers nationwide to monitor the price of 480 controlled items to ensure the price remained at a reasonable level.
“The ministry will also extend the period for the implementation of the Festive Season Price-Controlled Scheme (SKHMP) for the coming Christmas, which will also start earlier," he said, adding that the date for the scheme to be enforced would be announced soon.
He warned traders against increasing the prices of their goods indiscriminately, saying that the ministry will not hesitate to take action against the errant ones.
To a supplementary question from Lim on manufacturers increasing the price of their products due to rising operation cost, Nanta said the ministry was holding talks with other ministries, including the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry (MAFI) to control the price at the farm level.
Meanwhile, Nanta said the issue on the price increase was not only happening in Malaysia, but worldwide.
He said studies by world bodies such as the World Economic Forum, the International Monetary Fund, the International Food Policy Research Institute also supported this.
In fact, a report by the Cable News Network (CNN) on Nov 5 also cited the increase in world food prices by up to 30 per cent this year, he added.
He said the ministry would continue to implement pro-active measures, including mobilising its 2,200 existing enforcement personnel to ensure traders did not engage in profiteering activities.
The ministry will also continue to enforce provisions under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 to ensure there is no increase in the price of goods due to insufficiency or non-availability of goods in the market, he added.

British warplane worth £100 million crashed into the sea during a take-off attempt
British F-35 crashed into sea after failing to take off Indepandent
A British warplane worth £100 million crashed into the sea during a take-off attempt and may have hit part of HMS Queen Elizabeth, leaked footage suggests.
The 16-second video, which surfaced on social media and has not been verified by The Independent, shows the F-35 stealth jet move slowly up the ramp before dropping out of frame as the pilot ejects to safety.
Reports suggest foreign object debris such as a plastic rain cover may have been sucked into the plane’s engine, causing it to fail.
“Given how close the aircraft ditched to the bow, and the speed of the ship on launch, the likelihood of it hitting the bow of the ship (under the waterline) would be quite high,” Commander Tom Sharpe, a former Royal Navy officer, told the Sky News.
“Warship steel is not that thick so, even despite the weight discrepancy between the two, I would want the compartments near the bow checked immediately… I would then want the hull dived on at the first opportunity, just to be sure.”
An investigation was launched into the 17 November incident in which the pilot, part of the crew of HMS Queen Elizabeth, was found safe and has since been returned to the ship.
The “fifth generation” F-35 is one of the most expensive air weapons platforms in the world; the UK has signed deal worth nine billion pounds to buy 28 aircraft by 2025.
The cost of the aircraft, built by Lockheed Martin, continued to rise during the manufacturing process leading to strong criticism from former US president, Donald Trump.
In addition, a long list of problems emerged with the Pentagon acknowledging that 275 different faults have been found in the attack system. The US Marine Corps suspended operations on its version of the aircraft, the same as the ones used by the UK, after computer malfunctions.

MOSTI to conduct clinical trials for two locally-produced vaccines - Dr Adham BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 -- The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) will be conducting clinical trials for two vaccines produced in the country through the establishment of the Malaysian Genome and Vaccine Institute (MGVI).
Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said the two vaccines are for nasopharyngeal cancer and cholera, which will undergo clinical trials in the United Kingdom and India as early as next year.
“We are also in the process of developing a COVID-19 vaccine, which is being carried out by the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in collaboration with Universiti Malaya.
“We hope that with the establishment of MGVI, Malaysia will be able to become a hub for the production of vaccines that can be used domestically or abroad,” he said in Bernama TV’s Malaysia Petang Ini programme titled ‘Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia 100 Hari’ today.
On Nov 1, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob launched the National Vaccine Development Roadmap and MGVI in an effort to turn the country into a hub for vaccine production.
“MGVI will become a coordinating body between experts and the local and foreign industries while developing talents who will be the backbone of vaccine development in the future,” Dr Adham said.
Meanwhile, he said the COVID-19 Screening and Monitoring Mobile Device (i-Breath), which is entering the final pre-clinical phase, is expected to be commercialised by June next year, after going through clinical trials.
“The i-Breath will enter the clinical trial which comprises several phases for six months before it is ready to be commercialised and marketed.
“We are targeting for this device to be used not only locally but also internationally,” he added.
MOSTI has allocated a total of RM1.05 million for the development of i-Breath in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) that can detect the presence of COVID-19 virus with a sensitivity of up to 93 per cent by simply breathing into the mobile device.
SIA will assist the health authorities in all necessary contact tracing efforts
2 SIA passengers with Omicron transited at Changi airport
Reuters
SINGAPORE: Singapore’s health ministry said two travellers from Johannesburg who tested positive for the Omicron coronavirus variant in Sydney, had transited through Changi airport.
The two individuals left Johannesburg on Nov 27 on a Singapore Airlines flight and arrived at Changi on the same day for their transit flight, the ministry said in a statement. Both had tested negative for Covid-19 prior to departure, it added.
The ministry said most of the travellers had remained in the transit area at Changi Airport. Of the seven who disembarked, six had been placed on a 10-day stay at home notice, while the seventh, a close contact of an infected individual on the flight, had been quarantined.
“Contact tracing is ongoing for airport staff who may have come into transient contact with the cases,” the ministry said.
Australian authorities said on Sunday that the two passengers who tested positive on arrival in Sydney were fully vaccinated and had been placed in isolation.
Omicron has prompted countries across the globe including the US to limit travel from southern Africa, where the virus was first detected.
The World Health Organization said it carries a very high risk of infection surges, but said no deaths have yet been linked to the new variant.
Nazri Aziz admits receiving donation from undersea tunnel contractor BERNAMA
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 -- A former Tourism and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz told the Session Court here today that he received a donation from Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli, the contractor of the Penang undersea tunnel and paired road project.
Mohamed Nazri, 67, said the donation was to rehabilitate dilapidated religious schools in Pattani district in South Thailand.
He said this when he was cross-examined by former Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s lead counsel Gobind Singh Deo, who is representing Lim in a corruption case involving the construction of an undersea tunnel and paired road project in the state worth RM6.3 billion.
Gobind: Did you receive any payment for the case (tunnel project)? Mohamed Nazri replied "No".
The witness also denied he had received RM500,000 in cash from Zarul Ahmad.
Meanwhile, during re-examination by deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, the 14th prosecution witness said Zarul Ahmad knew that the donation was for the construction of religious schools in Pattani.
When questioned by Wan Shaharuddin, as to whether the donation was for charity, Mohamed Nazri replied, “I am from Hulu Perak, a Malay of Pattani descent. I have visited Pattani since 1975, there are many pondok schools that are rundown. So from the 1990s, I got involved in getting donations to build schools in South Thailand.”
When he read his witness statement earlier, Mohamed Nazri said he came to know Zarul Ahmad in the early 1990s as a businessman through some of his old friends and they often exchanged views about the country’s current affairs.
“After the introduction, I knew Zarul Ahmad owned several companies in Malaysia. One of those was Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd. I am close to Zarul Ahmad but not in terms of politics or business.
“I don’t have any business dealings with him. I am close to him personally and socially. Throughout my association with him, I know he worked with various agencies and companies,” he added.
Initially, Zarul Ahmad did tell him that he wanted to know someone of influence in Penang to get him a project, but he did not state what the project was related to, he said.
“Afer that, I took the initiative to contact and ask Lim if he is interested to meet Zarul regarding projects in Penang. Lim agreed to meet with him and I arranged a meeting for them in early January 2011 at the Shangri La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. I don’t recall the actual date of the meeting.
“In early January 2011, I met with Lim at a pub in Shangri La Hotel. I don’t remember about the nature of the conversation at the pub, but Lim and I met around 9 pm.
"Zarul Ahmad, who came alone, showed up 10 minutes after. Besides introducing Zarul Ahmad to Lim, I really did not have any other dealings with Lim. Lim is an acquaintance of mine in politics,” Mohamed Nazri said.
The witness added that he could not recall if Zarul Ahmad had asked Lim to choose his company for any project in Penang throughout the one-hour meeting.
“As far as I recall, I also met Lim and Zarul Ahmad in March 2011 at an Italian restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. But I don’t remember if I contacted Lim or Zarul Ahmad to meet at the restaurant. I also don’t remember what time they both left the restaurant,” he said.
Lim is charged with using his position and Penang chief minister to solicit RM3.3 million in kickbacks for helping a company owned by Zarul Ahmad to secure a construction project worth RM6,341,383,702 at the Penang Chief Minister’s Office, Level 28, Komtar, George Town between January 2011 and August 2017.
He is also charged with soliciting 10 per cent of future profits from Zarul Ahmad as a reward for helping secure the project near The Garden Hotels, Lingkaran Syed Putra, Mid Valley City, Kuala Lumpur in March 2011.
Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, is facing two other charges involving two plots of land worth RM208.8 owned by the Penang state government that have been disposed to two companies allegedly linked to the undersea tunnel project.
The hearing before Judge Azura Alwi continues tomorrow.
Lionel Messi has won the men’s 2021 Ballon d’Or, and a record seventh trophy, at an awards ceremony in Paris on Monday evening.
Messi, 34, held off the challenge of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Chelsea’s Jorginho to collect the prize and move two clear in his long-running battle with five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who was among the 30 players shortlisted but did not feature in the top three for the first time in 11 years.
Messi was the favourite to collect the award after winning the Copa America with Argentina earlier this year – his first major international trophy – despite one of his less impressive periods at club level: Barcelona finished third in La Liga and fell in the first knockout round of the Champions League. However, Messi scored two goals as Barca won the Copa del Rey final and he was La Liga’s top goalscorer once more, before switching to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
Lewandowski did pick up the consolation prize of the newly formed Striker of the Year award, while the Women’s Ballon d’Or went to Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas.
Further awards went to Gianluigi Donnarumma for the Yashin Trophy of best goalkeeper, to Barcelona midfielder Pedri as the starlet was handed the Kopa Trophy and another new award went to Chelsea for Club of the Year for their on-pitch achievements with both men’s and women’s teams.
MESSI GIVES LEWANDOWSKI A MENTION
"I don't know how many years I have left, but I hope there will still be many because I am having enormous fun," Messi said at the France Football ceremony where he picked up his seventh Ballon d'Or before praising Lewandowski, who was the favourite to win the 2020 Ballon d'Or until it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
"You deserve your Ballon d'Or," the Argentine added. "Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner."
